Spam is one of our island’s favorite canned goods. You can’t miss the little oblong cans of Spam with the blue and yellow label stacked high on the shelves at our local markets.
Adding a crunchy coating to Spam turns it into an onolicious meal. Give it a go and see how easy it is to elevate that can of Spam!
Katsu sandos are high on my list of the tastiest sandwiches but when I don’t have time to drive to the store for pork or chicken, Spam comes to the rescue. Crispy Spam tucked into soft bread with cabbage and tonkatsu sauce is an easy and satisfying lunch.
This is your typical breading station with flour, eggs and panko.
Golden brown crunchy perfection!
Serve Spam katsu with Japanese rice and pickles, in a sandwich, or musubi. When I have leftover Spam katsu, I slice each slab into 6 even pieces, pan fry until nice and crispy, and serve it for breakfast with scrambled or fried eggs. Delish.
Spam Katsu
8
servingsIngredients
1 can (12 ounces) low sodium or original Spam, cut into 8 slabs
1/4 cup flour
2 large eggs – whisked
1 1/3 cup panko
Oil for frying
Directions
- Prepare your breading station with flour, eggs, and panko in separate bowls.
- Dredge each slice of Spam into the flour, followed by egg and finally Panko. Press gently to help the coating adhere well. Set aside on a piece of foil or plate.
- Heat a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat with enough oil to reach 1/4-inch up the sides of the pan. Once the oil is hot, place Spam into the pan. Cook until crispy, about 3 minutes, then flip and cook the other side for another 2 minutes or until nicely browned. Lower heat if needed during the cooking time to avoid burning the panko.
- Remove Spam katsu onto a paper towel lined plate. Dish up with your favorites such as rice, cabbage salad, Japanese pickles, tonkatsu sauce and spicy yellow mustard or use for Spam musubi or Spam katsu sandos.
Notes
- If you have leftovers, refrigerate and serve for breakfast the following day. Cut each slab into 6 pieces and fry in a bit of oil until nice and crispy. Serve with fried or scrambled eggs and a side of rice!
